In Philippians 2.1-16 Paul puts the cross shaped life of Jesus right at the center of what it means to be the church. Healthy community and robust mission are both dependent upon people who will live a cruciform life. Paul says that it will work out best when we all agree to have the mind of Christ, when we’re all guided by his desires, intentions, and values. He puts the self-emptying of Jesus right at the heart of what it means to be Christian. We are no longer to grasp for even those things that rightly belong to us, but rather in open handed surrender to God we offer everything we have and everything we are to the One who gave up everything for us.
