From Matthew 12.38-42 comes the story of the religious elites demanding a sign from Jesus. “Prove yourself to us,” they say, “and then we’ll believe you.” Jesus knows these kinds of bargains aren’t really good for us, even though we try to make them with God all the time. His response is that something greater than any sign they could ask for is already present. Something greater than signs and wonders and spectacle. What if that something greater is offered to us as well?
