From Luke 19.1-10 comes the famous story of Zacchaeus’s encounter with Jesus. Zacchaeus, like the tax collector praying at the temple in Jesus’ parable, was unable to lift his eyes to the Lord. So the short man climbed a tree and, rather than having a distant and impersonal sighting of Jesus, he ended up hosting Jesus for dinner in his home. From beginning to end, Zacchaeus got more than he bargained for that day as he learned both sides of mercy–receiving and giving.
