We look today at John 15.9-17, zeroing in on Jesus’ distinction between servants and friends. As we marvel at Jesus calling us friends, we wonder what it might mean to be friends like this with one another and with those in need. Being an advocate for someone else can be hard work, but we often make it harder on ourselves and one another by loading up expectations and claims that we can’t fulfill and the relationship can’t support. Jesus says his way of love can be trusted to bring transformation. But can we risk letting go of changing others and focus on caring spiritual friendships instead?
