Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem on what we now call Palm Sunday signaled that the promised Messiah had come to do exactly what a Messiah was supposed to do: end the exile and defeat the enemies of God. But in Luke’s account of the story (Luke 19.28-44) Jesus begins to weep over Jerusalem in the middle of the victory march then predicts the destruction of the city. His unexpected response comes from a crucial insight, that our enemies are not God’s enemies. Sometimes the most dangerous enemy is within us.
