We were created to be image bearers who become like what we behold. So who we become is determined by who we pay attention to and who we follow, because imitation is natural, even automatic. So the question for St. Paul in Philippians 3.15-21 isn’t whether people can grow and change but whether they’ll choose the right pattern to trace. The danger is that we’ll choose an outward, self-righteous pattern of life to gain respectability or influence or position. Paul sketches for us an example of a more genuine faith in Christ.
