In Mark 11.12-25 Jesus has made the climb to Jerusalem and now the tension in the story is increasing. Jesus walks straight into the temple and begins turning everything upside down. The Messiah, everyone knew, would come and cleanse the temple from “them,” not from “us.” Because of Jesus’ temple protest, the conflict with the authorities is building. Jesus tells his disciples not to worry. Say the word and this mountain will be thrown into the sea, he says. Just one thing though: you’ve got to forgive everyone of everything in order for this to work. Today we consider what Jesus was doing, how it is connected to forgiving others, and what it tells us about the church today.
